Our Materials

We have three primary materials: LITE, Ullfrotté Original and skilled socks. Each of these materials has a specific purpose and can be used with other materials to create the perfect insulation for your body.

LITE

Even though Woolpower LITE consists of 80% merino wool, we often describe it as our coolest material. Despite the high percentage of merino wool, it feels cooler than Ullfrotté thanks to the way it is knitted.

It is ideal for people who naturally run warm or who need a thinner base layer for milder temperatures and higher-intensity activities. The material is rib-knitted and sits close to the body, making it soft, flexible and comfortable to wear directly against the skin.

More wool, less warmth

Ullfrotté Original has terry loops on the inside that trap large amounts of air and create an insulating layer between the body and the fabric. LITE does not have these loops. Instead, the fabric is rib-knitted and sits closer to the skin, creating more contact points that allow body heat to dissipate.

This is why LITE feels cooler despite the high wool content.

Flexible and comfortable material

Garments that chafe or feel uncomfortable can quickly ruin an activity. That is why Woolpower LITE has been developed to be soft, flexible and close-fitting.

The merino wool used in the material has a fibre diameter of 19.5 microns. Combined with the rib-knit construction, this creates an elastic fabric that is soft against the skin while remaining flexible.

The fabric is stretchy and follows the body’s movements without feeling restrictive.

Ullfrotté Original

Ullfrotté Original is a unique material that was developed by Woolpower in the early 1970s. It's a knitted fabric with a smooth outer surface and terry loops on the inside. This combination of merino wool, synthetic fiber and an open construction provides both insulation and moisture-wicking properties.

Our Ullfrotté range from 200 to 800 grams. The higher the grams, the thicker the material.

Why Ullfrotté insulates so well

Ullfrotté traps a significant amount of air within the fabric. The soft terry loops, combined with the natural crimp of the wool fibers, create an insulating layer with few contact points against the skin. Since air conducts heat less effectively than textiles, this helps retain body heat close to the body.

Wicks moisture away from the body

When the body becomes sweaty, moisture is transported away from the skin through the material. At the same time, the air trapped in the fabric continues to provide insulation. This is why the garment can still feel warm even when the material is damp.

Soft yet durable material

Merino wool is a very fine, soft, and naturally crimped wool that is ideal for garments worn closest to the skin.

However, because merino wool is crimped, its durability on its own is not optimal. To make the garments we knit as durable as possible, the wool is blended with one-third synthetic fibers. The side closest to the body consists mostly of merino wool.

Skilled Socks

Our skilled socks are our most advanced performance socks and are designed for activities where comfort, fit and durability make a real difference.

The construction is based on multiple panels that follow the shape of the foot and reinforce areas exposed to the most wear. The result is a sock that stays securely in place, reduces the risk of blisters and provides a soft step even on longer outings.

When you move, the sock fits closely around the foot and stays in place without sliding or causing chafing.

Skilled Liner

The skilled liner is a technically constructed, flat-knit sock designed to reduce the risk of blisters and chafing. When you move, the skilled liner fits closely around the foot and stays in place.

Around the ankle there is a stabilizing elastic band that provides support and keeps the sock securely in place. On the top of the foot there is a breathable mesh panel that helps transport moisture away.

The sock also features extra support over the instep, a reinforced heel and an integrated toe seam to minimize the risk of chafing.

Woolpower Skilled 400

Woolpower Skilled 400 is a technically constructed sock where flat knitting, Ullfrotté and compressive knit structures are combined to provide optimal support, insulation and comfort.

The sock is designed for outdoor activity. When you move, the skilled 400 fits closely around the foot and stays in place, providing stability and reducing the risk of blisters and chafing.

On the top of the foot there is a smooth panel without folds that creates an even fit and helps keep the sock securely in place. The instep has extra support, the heel is reinforced and the toe seam is integrated to reduce the risk of chafing.
